International Roman Law Moot

Cosimo Cascione at the IRLM in Pompeii in April 2015

The whole IRLM community mourns the untimely death of a cherished friend and colleague, Professor Cosimo Cascione, who has died in Naples aged 55.

Professor of Roman Law and the Foundations of European Law at the Department of Jurisprudence at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Cosimo was a passionate and much-loved supporter of the IRLM, which he first attended in Kavala, Greece, in 2010. Together with Professor Carla Masi Doria, Cosimo hosted the IRLM in Naples, in 2015 and again in 2023.

Beyond his careful preparation and encouragement of successive Neapolitan teams, and his insightful contributions from the bench, Cosimo was always a lively, uplifting and often mischievous presence at the Moot, from his shouts of ‘Corruption!’ when prizes were awarded, to his renditions of O sole mio after the gala dinner. With a perfectly serious face, he memorably asked a mooter whether a wild boar had the habit of returning to its mother, a domestic sow owned by one of the parties, because it was an Italian boar.

Cosimo will be sorely missed by friends and colleagues around the world.
